Close the tag gap
Tags are the cheapest ranking lever on Etsy: every listing gets thirteen slots, and most sellers waste some. The fastest way to find the gap is to compare your listing against the listings already winning the term you want. CraftRank does this comparison for you inside Keyword Explorer. This workflow takes about two minutes.
We will use the search term drake album poster as a worked example.

Step 1: See the tags the leaders share
Open Keyword Explorer and search your term.
Find the Tags the leaders share card. These are the tags the top-ranking listings have in common, ranked by how many of them use each tag and the average rank of the listings that do. A tag used by most of the leaders is a tag Etsy strongly associates with this search. Those are the terms you cannot afford to leave out.
Step 2: Check your own listing against them
Just below the shared tags, open Check your listing against these tags and paste your own Etsy listing URL or ID, then choose Compare.
CraftRank fetches your listing and shows how many of the winning tags you already use, then lists the ones you are missing. This uses one listing lookup from your monthly quota, the same as opening the listing in Listing Explorer.
Step 3: Copy the gap into Etsy
Use Copy all missing to grab the missing tags in one go, or copy them one at a time.
Then, in your Etsy listing editor:
- Add the missing tags that genuinely describe your product. Relevance still matters; a tag that does not fit your item will not help you and can hurt.
- If all thirteen slots are already full, swap out your weakest single-word tags for the missing multi-word phrases. Multi-word tags match the way buyers actually search.
- Work the most important added terms into your title and first line of the description too, so they reinforce each other.
Step 4: Confirm and re-measure
Run the Listing SEO Audit on the listing to confirm the tags section now scores well, then come back to Keyword Explorer in a few weeks. As your listing re-ranks, the gap should shrink and your rank for the term should improve.
A note on relevance
Closing the tag gap is about coverage, not stuffing. The goal is to make sure you are not leaving an obviously relevant, high-demand tag unused, not to copy every tag a leader has. Add the ones that describe your product, and spend any remaining slots on the point of difference that makes your listing worth choosing.
